A full-spread illustration for Akash Poyam’s profile of the recently deceased Heera Markam, an indigenous leader who fought for the political empowerment of the Gonds, an indigenous group spread across 5 states in India.

While originally commissioned for only a portrait, after reading the rough draft I recommended a full-spread visual to communicate not just Heera Markam's legacy but to commemorate the Gonds' history of resistance and endeavour for self-determination.

We collaboratively produced a visual through studying photographs of protests and slogans, and emphasised the the colour yellow given its sacred significance in Gondi culture.
