An analytical research story about Aadhaar, India’s national identity system and the world’s largest biometric ID system. Although India has had a range of identity systems for various purposes, the Aadhaar Card radically altered this by either nullifying alternative ID forms, or subordinating them to the Aadhaar ID for even simple processes for e.g. short-term housing rentals, rations for below-poverty-line populations.
This iteration centres the element of surveillance, suggesting that the dependence on a single national ID for nearly everything, can create personal, individual tension, forcing one to watch if they are being watched, and also watch themselves.
